Necton is one of the oldest companies in Europe producing and selling microalgae and, since 2023, is one of the biggest. Being on the market since 1997 has allowed Necton to acquire immense scientific, technological, and business know-how in aquaculture and cosmetics sectors, but also in food, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutics, agriculture, and bioenergy. With the recent acquisition of Allmicroalgae, Necton now operates several microalgae cultivation technologies, ranging from open raceway ponds to closed tubular photobioreactors and industrial fermenters for heterotrophic cultivation. The company’s technology makes it possible to cultivate freshwater, marine, and hypersaline microalgae of many genera. In fact, Necton’s staff has experience with around 30 different microalgae species, including the genera Nannochloropsis, Tisochrysis, Chlorella and Spirulina. All production activities have been blended with continuous R&D over the years, as part of many national and European-funded research and training projects. Its history, experience and constant collaboration with universities, research centres and other companies, have raised Necton to the status of one of the leading European companies in the field of Microalgae Biotechnology.
